Decrease downtime during process migration using userfaultfd to restore memory pages on demand.

Abstract

One important goal around process migration is to reduce the process downtime during migration. CRIU already supports pre-copy to reduce process downtime during migration. Using pre-copy, unfortunately for processes with high memory change rates, can increase the process downtime during migration as this can lead to situation where more memory has to be transferred during migration.

During last years (2015) Linux Plumbers Conference the first discussions using userfaultfd in CRIU for process migration were started and this talk presents the results of the CRIU and userfaultfd integration.
